The story of the love between a man and a little girl. Set in Hertfordshire. “It has a most poetic feel to its composition, and places a great deal of emphasis on the new life which three children, especially Joy, bring to all whom they meet, while the novel carries with it an atmosphere of light and love.” The Vicar of Kimpton 1998

Anna, shy and timid. Mary, almost the opposite. Linnette, aloof and snobbish. Three girls growing up in a Hertfordshire village.

The interlude of THE WILLOWS OF CROSSTON And so it was that on a Friday evening in the first week of December, with Brandy safely ensconced at the home of William and his dog, Ben, and Jerrica locking the front door behind them, the three girls trooped down the garden path of their home to Joseph, waiting in his car. They stopped, in uncertainty of what was to come, the shadowy night around them, the chill of the air and being, at the same time, warm and ice-cold with expectation and excited anticipation.

Anne, unloved by her parents, determines to write stories and tell them to her younger sisters.

A musical play in two acts based on Cinderella. The central theme of this musical is that which becomes so much a part of someone, however insignificant its nature, is recognised as possessing the qualities of the said person’s soul. It is only love that matters, for without it we die. Only love can recognise love: thus it is love that brings about the understanding that the broom and its owner are one and the same. In THE BROOM the Fairy Godmother is God, and, having given a chance, begs for its safe deliverance: not demanding of it, for love cannot fight, it is not in its nature to do so. The reduction by one of the number of the Chorus is significant: also the refusal of the Crowd to believe unless it sees with its own eyes. Forgiveness is featured too, though noticeably not by the wrongdoers but by the maltreated.

This is the sequel to THE WILLOWS OF CROSSTON and THE BEGINNING. Both of those books gave clues, for want of a better expression, to the future of many of the characters. This book tells their stories. As Joy says, 'I have been dreaming of bygone times, all higgledy-piggledy.’
